's called americans for responsible solutions. they say their goal is to, quote, encourage elected officials to stand up for solutions that will prevent gun violence. it's a new political pressure group, in other words. congresswoman gabby giffords and her husband launched this today in a high profile, well done media blitz. they sat through a moving interview with diane sawyer. they published a joint op ed in usa today where they demanded change from washington. but they also pointed to their own unique role in this fight, not just with the former congresswoman as a victim of gun violence, but with her having been a member of congress who was a staunch supporter of the second amendment. gabby giffords was a very pro-gun rights democratic member of congress. she and her husband are not commie liberal pinkos coming to confiscate yours guns. they are both gun owners themselves. here in this chamber as the duely elected member of the assembly continues his hard work and does honor to his memory. thank you. just three months ago, we were proceeding normally with our lives getting ready for a national election and the holidays to follow. then sandy hit. sandy was the worst storm to strike new jersey in our history. 346,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. nearly 7 million people and over 1,000 schools were without power. 116,000 new jerseyens were evacuated or displayed from their homes. 41,000 families are still displaced from their homes today. sandy may have damaged our homes and our infrastructure, but it did not destroy our spirit. the people of new jersey have comes together as never before across party lines, across ideological lines, across ages, and races, and backgrounds. from all parts of our state. even from out of state. everyone has come together. so today, let me start this address with a set of thank yous from me on behalf of the people of this great state. first, i want to thank the brave first responders, the national guard, and emergency manage

who won an election to decide to pick one or two big personnel fights. that happens in politics. think think -- the white house calculation, jim's dead right about the iraq war. if we have to re-debate the iraq war, they're on the high ground for that one and hearing criticism he's soft. normally when a democrat does that, they want someone that's tough because the criticism historically is they're soft on defense and here's a republican choice labeled as soft, soft on israel and soft coming to iran sanctions. john mccain and other conservatives say soft with the end of the iraq war and the president's comfortable with him and comfortable with the new cia chief. the president doesn't have to face re-election. this is the second term a different set of calculations and thinks he has work to do, diplomacy. they think they'll win in the end. >> i want to ask you about hagel's israel comments because he made some pretty pointed comments about israel and going to quote them. in one, hagel said, i'm not an israeli senator. and another, quote, the jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people up h
